How to Use Coupon Codes Online: Step-by-Step Guide

Updated 2026-10-06

A coupon code is a short word or mix of letters and numbers that you type in at checkout to lower your total. It sounds simple, yet many shoppers pay full price because a code did not work and they gave up. This guide shows the exact steps and the mistakes behind most failed codes.

Step-by-step: applying a code

  1. Read the terms first. Every code has conditions: a percentage, a maximum saving, a minimum basket, or a list of excluded items. On our FirstCry page, for example, the code SHON or BF99 gives 10% but excludes diapers, wipes and Dyson.
  2. Pick the right country. Codes are often tied to one country or store region. Check that the store site is set to your country before you add anything to the basket.
  3. Fill your basket. Add the items you actually want. Do not add extra items only to reach a minimum unless you really need them.
  4. Open the cart and find the code box. It is usually labelled "Promo code", "Coupon" or "Discount code", often under the order summary.
  5. Type or paste the code exactly. Copy it from the coupon card to avoid typos, and make sure no space is copied at the end.
  6. Press Apply and check the total. The discount should appear as a separate line. If it does not, do not pay yet.
  7. Pay only after you see the new total. Once the order is placed, most stores cannot add a code afterwards.

Why a code fails: the common mistakes

You are below the minimum

Some codes need a minimum basket value. If your basket is under it, the code is simply refused. Read the minimum in the terms and compare it with your subtotal, not your total with delivery.

The items are excluded

Many codes do not apply to items that are already on sale, new collections, or certain categories. If your basket holds only excluded items, the discount will show as zero.

New customer only

Some codes are for first orders only. Others, like the one on noon, give different values to new and existing customers. Using the wrong account type can change the saving.

Wrong country or currency

A code written for the Saudi site may not work on the UAE site. Match the code to the country shown on its card.

Typing errors and case

Codes are normally uppercase. A zero versus the letter O is the classic confusion, so copy and paste whenever you can.

Stacking several offers

Most stores allow one code per order. If a store banner already applied an automatic offer, a second code may replace it or be blocked.

A quick checklist before you pay

  • Is the code for my country?
  • Does my basket reach the minimum, if any?
  • Are my items eligible?
  • Did the total actually go down?
  • Is there a maximum saving, and is it worth it for this order?

Some stores on our site, such as SHEIN, do not need a code at all: the deal works through the shop link. In that case just open the store from our page and shop normally.

If nothing works

Clear the basket, refresh the page, and try again from a fresh tab. If it still fails, contact the store's chat and ask whether the code is active for your account. Do not buy codes from strangers or enter your card details on any page that is not the official store site.

Codes, discounts and terms can change at any time. Always check the store's terms at checkout before you pay.
