How to Buy Perfume and Oud Online: A Practical Guide
You cannot smell a bottle through a screen, which makes online perfume shopping feel risky. A few basic ideas, though, remove most of the guesswork, and Gulf shoppers have an advantage: many local houses explain their scents in detail.
Learn the basics
Concentration
Perfumes are usually sold as eau de toilette, eau de parfum or parfum (extrait). Generally, higher concentration means a stronger scent that lasts longer and often costs more. Many oud-based and Arabian fragrances are rich oils or concentrated sprays.
Notes
Top notes appear first and fade quickly, heart notes form the character, and base notes stay for hours. Oud, amber, musk and sandalwood are typical base notes in Arabian perfumery. Read the note pyramid on the product page and imagine how it develops, not only the opening.
Oud, bakhoor and attar
Oud is a deep woody scent. Bakhoor is scented wood chips burnt at home. Attar is an alcohol-free perfume oil. They are different products, so check which one you are buying.
How to choose without smelling
- Start from what you already like. Compare the notes with a perfume you wear often.
- Buy a small size first. A 30 or 50 ml bottle or a discovery set lowers the risk.
- Read several customer remarks about longevity and sillage, which is how far the scent travels.
- Think about season and place. Light citrus and fresh scents suit hot days; oud and amber suit evenings.
- Test on skin at home. Wear it for a day before deciding it is a favourite. Perfume smells different as your skin warms it.
Stores and our codes
- Rasees: a Saudi perfume house with fragrances, oud and bakhoor. Code
RS3gives 7% off at checkout. - Reef Perfumes: Saudi perfumes. Code
TT30gives 10% off, up to SAR 15. - Al Daham: perfumes with watches and jewellery. Code
DD916gives 20% off all items except New Collections (5% on those), plus 5% extra on discounted items.
Notice how different the terms are. A 10% code capped at SAR 15 stops growing after a SAR 150 order, while a flat percentage keeps growing with your basket. Do the sum for your own order before deciding where to buy.
Authenticity and storage
- Buy from the official store or a clearly authorised seller.
- Check the box is sealed and the batch code is present, where applicable.
- Be suspicious of prices far below every other store.
- Store bottles away from sunlight and heat, which damage scent quickly, especially in hot climates.
Gifting
If you buy a perfume as a gift, choose a classic crowd-pleaser rather than an unusual oud the receiver may not like. Keep the invoice, and check the store's policy on opened fragrances, since many stores do not accept returns on opened bottles. See our Ramadan and Eid guide for more gift ideas.
Take your time: a good perfume should be chosen, not rushed.
Codes, discounts and terms can change at any time. Always check the store's terms at checkout before you pay.
