Buying a Refurbished Phone or Laptop Safely: Full Guide
A refurbished phone or laptop can cost much less than a new one and still do everything you need. The risk is not the idea, it is buying from the wrong seller or without checking the details. Use this checklist.
What does refurbished mean?
A refurbished device is a used product that has been inspected, repaired where needed, cleaned and tested before resale. It is different from a simple second-hand device sold privately, where nobody has checked it for you. The quality depends on the seller, so the seller matters more than the product.
Questions to ask before buying
1. Who refurbished it?
Look for a store that tests devices itself and explains its process. Cartlow sells refurbished and new phones, laptops and tablets in the UAE and Saudi Arabia.
2. What is the grade?
Sellers use grades to describe cosmetic condition, for example from like-new to visible wear. Always read the store's own definition of each grade, because the words are not standard. Look at the product photos, which should show the real device or a clear description.
3. What is the battery health?
Battery wear is the most common complaint. Ask whether the battery has been tested or replaced, and whether a minimum capacity is guaranteed.
4. Is there a warranty?
A warranty is the main reason to buy from a store instead of an individual. Check how long it lasts, what it covers and how claims are made.
5. What is the return window?
Know how many days you have to return the device and in what condition it must be.
What to check when it arrives
- Check the model, storage size and colour against the order.
- Inspect the screen and body for damage not mentioned in the listing.
- Test the screen, touch, speakers, microphone, cameras, charging port and buttons.
- Check Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and mobile signal with your SIM.
- For phones, make sure the device is not locked to a carrier or an old account.
- For laptops, test the keyboard, trackpad, ports and fan noise.
- Check battery health in the settings and run it for a few hours.
Do all of this in the first days, while the return window is open.
Cartlow code H25
Our code for Cartlow is H25. Terms on the store page: 15% off up to AED/SAR 30, minimum basket 150, once per customer. This means your basket must reach 150 to qualify, you save at most 30, and it works once for each customer. At a basket of 200, 15% is 30, so you already reach the cap. Larger baskets do not increase the saving, so the code suits small and medium purchases such as accessories, a used tablet or a cheaper phone.
New or refurbished?
If you need the latest model, the best camera or long software support, new may make more sense. If you want a reliable everyday device for a lower price, refurbished is a strong option. Compare the same specification on noon as well.
Red flags
- No warranty or return policy
- Vague condition description
- Price far below similar listings
- Seller asking you to pay outside the platform
Codes, discounts and terms can change at any time. Always check the store's terms at checkout before you pay.
